Congratulatory Remarks of
Chancellor of Korea National Diplomatic Academy
on the occasion of the on-line conference
“Bulgaria-Korea: Partners in a changing World”

Sofia, January 19, 2021

Tanya Mlhailova, Director of the Diplomatic institute, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria,
Ambassador Petko Draganov,
Ambassador 정진규,
Dr. 이근 President of the Korea Foundation,
Distinguished Guests,
Ladies and Gentlemen,

Let me begin by expressing deep appreciation to Director Mlhailova and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria for the excellent arrangements made for this meaningful conference today.
I would also like to thank Ambassador Draganov, Ambassador Jung, Dr. Lee and distinguished guests for participating in today’s discussion.

Last year marked the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Korea and Bulgaria. All of you have worked so diligently to maintain active interactions by making the effort to genuinely connect with each other, and I believe your efforts have greatly contributed to deepening the relationship between the two countries in various fields.

I would also like to note that the Bulgarian Center established at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in 2019 has played an important role in advancing bilateral relations.
In particular, diverse researches and events conducted by the Center in celebration of the 30th anniversary of establishing diplomatic ties last year have contributed to bringing the two countries closer together.

I look forward to seeing more research activities and projects that could significantly bolster bilateral relations in the coming years.

Since adopting the Joint Declaration on the Comprehensive and Future-Oriented Partnership, Korea and Bulgaria have gradually expanded the scope of collaboration.
Despite geographical distance, I am convinced that we are great partners with our shared commitment to ensuring a better quality of life and well-being for the people as well as safeguarding global peace and prosperity.

I truly believe our relations, which have lasted 30 years, will become more reciprocal and future-oriented in the years ahead.

The year 2020 was not only the 30th anniversary of Korea-Bulgaria diplomatic relations, but a year like no other in recent history;  COVID-19, an unprecedented global crisis swept the world.
Despite the challenges presented by COVID-19, we stood together and made joint efforts based on a sense of solidarity to navigate our way through difficult times.
2020 was a year of grief and hardship, as the coronavirus pandemic rampaged across every continent. But I am strongly convinced that 2021 will be a year of recovery and a gradual rebuilding of our lives. I hope our decades long cooperation, underpinned by friendship and trust, will help us lead the post-pandemic new normal.

In this regard, today’s conference, arranged to discuss the future of cooperation between Korea and Bulgaria in promoting public diplomacy, economic recovery and education in times of pandemic, is a very timely event that carries major significance.

Distinguished Guests, friends and colleagues,

Bulgarian rose oil is extracted from the petals of beautiful roses to make perfumes with exquisite rose scent. This gift of nature is known to instill feelings of calm and relaxation. Maybe this is what we need now. We need to remain calm in today’s chaotic world and try to draw a brighter picture for future generations. I hope today’s discussions will help us generate meaningful insights on ways to navigate the challenges we face and chart a brighter future.

I will look forward to fruitful discussions today. Thank you.
